I love this dessert because it's so simple and really takes minimal effort. It's great if you're having a dinner party, or family over for a holiday meal and you don't have much time to focus on making a complex dessert. But, it's also a great dessert to make when you have leftover chocolate and want something to satisfy your sweet tooth!
What's on your grocery list?
- 6-8 oz bar of Dark Chocolate or a bag of Chocolate Chips
- Eggs
- Mini bottle of Brandy
- Vanilla
- White Sugar (if you're out, use brown)
- Milk (I use whole milk for this recipe but it should work with whatever's in your pantry)
- Salt
- Optional- Heavy Whipping Cream
- Optional- Berries for topping
Prep Time: 7 Minutes
Cook Time: 2 Hours
Servings: 3-4
Ingredients- Chocolate Mousse:
- 6-8 oz of Dark Chocolate or Chocolate Chips
- 1 Egg
- 1 Tbsp Brandy
- 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
- 2 Tbsp Sugar
- 3/4 cup Milk
- Dash of Salt
Ingredients- Whipped Cream:
- Heavy Whipping Cream
- Dash of Sugar
Instructions:
*Make ahead mousse needs two hours to set*
Bring 3/4 cup milk to boiling in a small pot. While milk is cooking, roughly chop chocolate (if you are using a bar) into smaller pieces so that it can melt easily in the hot milk.
After milk reaches boiling, add it along with the chocolate, egg, brandy, sugar, vanilla, and salt to a blender, and blend until all ingredients are well combined (about a minute).
Pour mixture into small-shallow bowls as pictured below, and allow mousse to cool, uncovered, in the refrigerator for about 2 hours.
If you plan to make homemade whip cream for topping, (which I strongly recommend) place a medium sized bowl in the freezer when you finish making the mousse. Though this isn't critical, having a nice, cold bowl allows the whip cream to form faster.
After Chocolate Mousse has set and is ready to serve, remove the empty bowl from freezer, add 1/2 - 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream to the bowl along with a pinch of sugar, then use an electric mixer to beat until stiff peaks form and whip cream is thick. You'll have to be patient with this step, it can take a while, (5-7 minutes) but I promise the whip cream is a million times better than the store bought stuff!
Once whip cream is ready, spoon a dollop on top of chocolate mousse, add berries if you like, and enjoy!
